Reykjavik wedding photographer

I'm Monika, a wedding photographer in Reykjavik

I’m Monika and I photograph weddings and elopements in Reykjavik and across Iceland. Reykjavik is very different from classic “European” cities – colourful houses on the hillside, views of the Atlantic, the modern glass Harpa concert hall on the waterfront and the silhouette of Hallgrímskirkja rising above the city.

Add to that the ever-changing weather, low sun, long summer evenings and, in winter, the chance of northern lights. All of this creates a backdrop for images that are soft, personal and deeply connected to the place.

Wedding photographer since 2017 – over 100 weddings documented.
I help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera and enjoy their day.
My work is often described as natural, timeless and calm.

Why choose me as your wedding photographer in Reykjavik

Reykjavik wedding photographer Monika

On your wedding day I’m with you in the moments when no one else usually is – during the morning preparations in a small hotel room overlooking the bay, in the quiet pause before the ceremony, in that first relieved breath after you say “I do”, at the table among your family and in the evening with the wind coming in from the ocean.

I pay attention to the small details – how nerves, joy and calm take turns, how the light changes above the city, how you look at each other when you feel like no one is watching. To be able to capture all of this, you need to feel safe and comfortable with me there.

I’m not there to turn you into someone you’re not or to push you into awkward poses. My role is to create a clear, calm framework – to explain when and where we’ll be taking photos so nothing comes as a surprise – and then let the day unfold naturally.

  • Within 7 days after the wedding you’ll receive at least 50 edited photos from me as a first taste of the full gallery from your day in Reykjavik.
  • I photograph quietly and mostly in a documentary way – I follow what’s happening instead of staging scenes and I hardly interfere with the flow of the day.
  • The couple session is short and relaxed, more like a calm walk – you’ll get simple, easy-to-follow guidance, but what matters most is your connection, your gestures and how you feel together.
  • We’ll adapt the time for portraits to your schedule – the goal is not to disappear from your own wedding for an hour, but to have beautiful photos and a genuine experience of the day.

You simply enjoy your day with the people you love – and I’ll make sure you have a complete, atmospheric photo story from Reykjavik to remember it by.

I'm a wedding photographer in Reykjavik

Reykjavik wedding photographer Monika

I photograph weddings right in the centre of Reykjavik, in hotels and guesthouses with views over the city, in modern venues by the harbour and in smaller guesthouses in the surrounding area. We often start with getting ready in the streets around Laugavegur, continue with a church ceremony or an outdoor ceremony, and end the day by the ocean or in venues near the old harbour.

I love days when the settings change naturally – morning coffee in the city, a ceremony in a church or on the cliffs, a short couple session by the coastline or near the Sun Voyager sculpture, and an evening party indoors while the weather outside changes every few minutes.

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Reykjavik or anywhere in Iceland, I’m happy to help with the practical side too – we’ll go through how much time for photos actually makes sense, when to set aside a quiet moment for couple portraits and how to weave photography into the day in a way that still lets you fully enjoy it.

Weddings in Reykjavik – the ocean, the old town and the surrounding nature

Reykjavik is a compact city where you can move between very different settings in a single day. Around landmarks like Hallgrímskirkja, Hotel Borg and the streets leading down to the harbour you’ll find colourful houses, cafés and small squares – ideal for a short pre-wedding walk or a relaxed couple session between the ceremony and the reception. Down by the water, the glass façade of Harpa Concert Hall and the iconic Sun Voyager sculpture offer open views of the ocean and mountains, while the Old Harbour & Grandi district works beautifully for sunset portraits or an evening reception by the sea.

Smaller green areas, waterfront paths and intimate indoor spaces with large windows create quieter corners for outdoor ceremonies, first looks or family photos – all still within easy reach of Reykjavik’s skyline and harbour. If you prefer everything in one place, central venues such as the Golden Hall at Hotel Borg or event spaces inside Harpa let you stay in the city and still enjoy a more private atmosphere.

Beyond Reykjavik – Golden Circle and countryside hotels

Just outside the city you can reach the Golden Circle, where Þingvellir National Park, geysers and waterfalls create dramatic backdrops for elopements or day-after sessions. For couples who want to stay in nature with their guests, countryside hotels like Hotel Grímsborgir or ION Adventure Hotel combine accommodation, on-site event spaces and easy access to some of Iceland’s most iconic scenery.

We’ve just looked through the photos and they are perfect! Once again, thank you so much for the lovely experience during our pre-wedding shoot, for the smooth photography of our wedding day where you so discreetly captured all the important moments, for your helpfulness and patience, and also for the quick and amazing editing of the photos.

We’re really looking forward to having some of them printed and sharing them with our wedding guests too!

We’ll also be very happy if we get the chance to work with you again in the future, even if (hopefully) on a different occasion 🙂

I’m Monika – a wedding photographer in Reykjavik and across Iceland

Reykjavik wedding photographer Monika

I’m a wedding and elopement photographer who loves it when emotions connect with a specific place. In Iceland I’m especially drawn to the contrast between quiet, intimate moments and the raw landscape around you – whether we’re in the centre of Reykjavik, on cliffs above the ocean or by a waterfall.

Most of the day I stay in the background – watching and waiting for the small gestures, touches and glances you can’t recreate on command. When it’s needed, I’m practical and clear: I help organise group photos, suggest where to stand for the best light, and together we plan a short couple session so it fits naturally into your timeline.

I edit your photos in a clean, timeless way, without heavy filters that will feel dated in a few years. I want the colours, light and atmosphere to reflect how your day in Iceland really felt.

How I photograph weddings in Reykjavik

Reykjavik and its surroundings offer the city, ocean, mountains and geothermal landscapes – often all in a single day. When I photograph a wedding, I combine a documentary approach with a shorter couple session in the best light, whether it’s a summer golden hour or winter twilight with a soft orange glow.

Here’s what your day might look like from my perspective:

Morning preparations
A quiet hotel room, a friend’s house or a rented apartment. I photograph details, dresses, suits, moments with your closest people and the atmosphere of where the day begins.

Ceremony
Whether you’re getting married in a church, at the registry office or outside by the ocean, I capture arrivals, vows, the exchange of rings, guests’ reactions and congratulations. I don’t direct the ceremony – I simply look for angles that show your emotions in the most genuine way.

Group photos
We’ll prepare a list of group combinations in advance. On the day I guide the process so that everything runs quickly and efficiently, and your guests don’t spend half the day standing in line.

Couple session
We’ll plan it around the light and weather – it can take place in the city centre, near Harpa, by the ocean or at a location we drive to after the ceremony. I’ll give you simple prompts and plenty of space to just be yourselves, not a “perfect catalogue couple”.

Evening celebration
I document dancing, speeches, all the little moments between your guests and the overall atmosphere of the evening. I want you to feel the music, laughter and energy of the day in your gallery – not just see a few “obligatory” photos.

When I select and edit your photos, I treat the wedding as one complete story – from the first sip of morning coffee to the last hug at the end of the night.

How the process works

Many couples plan their wedding in Reykjavik from abroad. That’s why I keep the whole process simple and predictable:

First message
Send me your date, ceremony and reception locations, approximate guest count and a short description of your day. You can also mention if you’re considering an engagement or day-after session.

Short online call
We’ll arrange a video call to talk about your wedding style, priorities, what you expect from your photos and practical questions – from weather and light to your timeline.

Coverage and pricing proposal
Based on your plans I’ll recommend how many hours of coverage make sense, how to spread the photography throughout the day, and I’ll send you a clear offer with pricing and everything that’s included.

Booking your date
If the offer feels right, I’ll send over a contract and details for the retainer. Once it’s paid, the date is firmly reserved for you.

Preparation before the wedding
A few weeks before the wedding we’ll fine-tune the schedule, addresses, important names and your group photo list. It’s also the moment to mention any special traditions or moments that are important to you.

Wedding day in Reykjavik
You focus on each other and your loved ones – I take care of the light, timing and the “logistics” of the photography. Throughout the day I only give you as much direction as needed to keep everything running smoothly.

Gallery and delivery
Shortly after the wedding I’ll send you a small preview – a handful of key images. Afterwards you’ll receive a complete online gallery, ready to share and print.
