Bilbao wedding photographer

I’m Monika, a wedding photographer in Bilbao

Congratulations on your engagement. I’m Monika and I photograph weddings and elopements in Bilbao, across the Basque Country and in the rest of Spain. Bilbao has a completely different feel from most Spanish cities – the historic Casco Viejo with its narrow streets, pintxos bars and Plaza Nueva, modern neighbourhoods along the Nervión river, the iconic Guggenheim Museum and, on top of that, green hills and the ocean just outside the city.

Thanks to the ocean climate, there are no extreme heatwaves or harsh winters here – summers are pleasantly warm and the evenings are perfect for shooting outdoors.

Wedding photographer since 2017 – over 100 weddings documented.
I help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera and enjoy their day.
My work is often described as natural, timeless and calm.

Why choose me as your wedding photographer in Bilbao

Bilbao wedding photographer

On your wedding day I’m often the person who is physically closest to you – I’m there for the morning preparations, the ceremony and the short couple session. I see the mix of anticipation and nerves, the relief after you say “yes”, hugs with your family, spontaneous laughter and all the small moments between the two of you that are easy for others to miss.

That’s why it’s so important to me that you feel calm and safe with me. My goal is that the photography doesn’t add stress, but actually supports you – even if the weather changes, the timeline shifts or something doesn’t go exactly according to plan.

  • My work is rooted mainly in a documentary style – I watch what’s happening instead of staging the day.

  • During the key moments (ceremony, vows, speeches, first dance) I step in only minimally, so they unfold for you, not for the camera.

  • For couple portraits I’ll gently guide you, but I’m mostly interested in your emotions and connection, not in perfect magazine poses.

  • We shape the photo schedule around your day, so you can spend as much time as possible with your guests.

  • Before the wedding we’ll go through locations, light and a rough timeline together, so you know exactly what to expect.

You enjoy your day with the people you love – and I’ll make sure your photos tell the story of your wedding and the atmosphere of Bilbao and the Basque Country.

I’m a wedding photographer in Bilbao

Bilbao wedding photographer

I photograph weddings in the city, by the river, in hotels with a view, at countryside fincas and in coastal towns around Bilbao. I love when a single day brings different settings together – getting ready in Casco Viejo in the morning, a ceremony in an elegant hotel or at the city hall, a short couple session along the Nervión river and an evening party in a hall overlooking the city.

I’m not chasing “perfect” Instagram shots. I want your gallery to reflect what your day was really like: who came to celebrate with you, what your relationships feel like, what the light, music and evening energy were like. If you’re planning a destination wedding in Bilbao, I can help you with location choices, light and the timeline so that the photography becomes a natural part of the day – not just another obligation.

Weddings in Bilbao – city, river and sea

Bilbao combines a historic old town, the river and modern architecture. In Casco Viejo you’ll find narrow streets, the small Plaza Nueva square and plenty of pintxos bars – perfect for a short walk and an engagement or couple session before or after the wedding.

Along the Nervión river you’ll find long promenades with views of the iconic Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, bridges and contemporary buildings – an ideal setting for an afternoon walk, a welcome drink or an evening photo session in soft light.

If you’re dreaming of an elegant city wedding in the centre, you can look at Hotel Carlton Bilbao – a historic five-star hotel with several ballrooms, terraces and full wedding services.

Bilbao surroundings – fincas, vineyards and hills

Just a short drive out of the city and you’re in a completely different landscape – countryside fincas surrounded by gardens, vineyards and views of the Basque hills.

One example is
Finca Viñedos de Butrón,
a rural wedding venue surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees, with views of the fairytale-like Castillo de Butrón. It’s located about 20 minutes from Bilbao and offers gardens, spaces for the ceremony and evening reception, as well as covered areas in case of rain.

If you’re drawn to wine and gastronomy, you can also combine your Bilbao wedding with a trip to the La Rioja wine region, where you’ll find vineyards, modern wineries and exceptional cuisine – perfect for an engagement session or a day-after shoot.

Adela & Peter

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“We could not have chosen a better photographer for our wedding! Monika is very professional and will make sure every important moment is captured in a very candid, not forced and non-invasive way. She went with the flow of our (sometimes chaotic) wedding and effortlessly adjusted to our needs/timing as was needed.
On a personal level, she is very sweet and curious, shows interest in you as a couple and your story, as well as your guests and the traditions you choose to include.
Since the beginning, we got a good impression of her and her work from her fast responses to our emails, through the cosy pre-wedding meeting, her dedication at the wedding and now to when we got the final pictures, she exceeded our expectations. 🙂 We strongly recommend her and would choose her again in a heartbeat. <3 Thank you again, Adela and Peter”

I’m Monika – a wedding photographer in Bilbao, the Basque Country and across Spain

Bilbao wedding photographer

I’m Monika, and if you’re planning a wedding or elopement in Bilbao, anywhere in the Basque Country or elsewhere in Spain, I’d love to be there with you. I mostly work with couples who want their photos to feel close, calm and full of the atmosphere of the place – not just like a collection of pretty poses.

On a wedding day I usually stay more in the background. I watch the small situations, gestures and glances, your family’s and friends’ reactions, the moments when you disappear into the crowd for a second, and the quiet pauses when you just sit down together. When it’s needed, though, I’m practical and specific – I’ll help organise group photos, suggest where to stand for the best light or recommend taking a short break just for the two of you.

I edit my photos in a clean, timeless way – without heavy filters that will feel dated in a few years. I keep the colours natural, so your gallery reminds you of what the day really felt like. Before the wedding we’ll go through your timeline, priorities and possible locations – whether you’re thinking about a wedding in the centre of Bilbao, by the river, on the coast or at a finca among the vineyards.

How I photograph weddings in Bilbao

Bride and groom cuddling in a narrow stone alley during their Bilbao old town wedding

Bilbao and the whole Basque Country offer many different backdrops in a single day – the city, the river, hills and the coastline. I usually combine a documentary approach with a shorter couple session at the time when the light is softest.

This is what your day might look like from my perspective:

  • Getting ready – I quietly photograph details, outfits, the atmosphere in the room and moments with your closest people.

  • Ceremony – I capture arrivals, vows, the exchange of rings, guests’ reactions and congratulations as they naturally unfold.

  • Group photos – I help with the list and organisation of groups so the photos go quickly and nobody has to wait too long.

  • Couple session – we plan it around the light and your timeline; it can take place in the streets of Casco Viejo, by the river, on a hotel terrace or out in nature.

  • Evening celebration – I photograph the dancing, speeches, little interactions between guests and the feel of the lights and music, so the evening really comes through in your photos, not just as a few obligatory shots.

When I select and edit your photos, I aim for the whole gallery to feel like one continuous story – from the first morning sip of coffee to the very last song.

How the process works

Many couples plan their wedding in Bilbao from a distance – from another city or country – so I try to keep the whole process as simple and clear as possible.

1. First message
Write to me with your wedding date, ceremony and reception location (Bilbao / nearby / another part of the Basque Country), an approximate guest count and a few lines about how you imagine your day. If you’re thinking about a pre-wedding / engagement session or an elopement, please mention that in your message as well.

2. Online call
We’ll schedule a short video call to talk through the style of your wedding, your timeline, priorities and any practical questions. We can also look at specific venues and locations you’re considering and discuss what makes sense to photograph when.

3. Coverage proposal and quote
Based on your plans, I’ll suggest how many hours of photography make sense, when to set aside time for couple photos and how to fit everything into your schedule. Then I’ll send you a clear price quote, so you know exactly what is included.

4. Booking your date
If working together feels right, I’ll send over a contract and details for the booking retainer. Once the retainer is paid, your date is firmly reserved in my calendar.

5. Before the wedding
A few weeks before the wedding we’ll fine-tune the final timeline, addresses, important names and a list of family and group photos. This is the perfect moment to mention any specific traditions or moments you definitely want captured.

6. Wedding day in Bilbao
You focus on each other and your guests – keeping an eye on the light, timing and smooth flow of the photography is my job. You don’t need to worry about technical details; I’m there to make sure nothing important is missed and that the photography doesn’t disturb the atmosphere of the day.

7. Delivery of your photos
Shortly after the wedding I’ll send you a small preview – a handful of key images as a first taste. The full edited gallery will then be delivered online, ready to view, share and print.
